HOWARD, KLINE AND MURPHY WIN FEATURES AT GRANDVIEW - Grandview

BECHTELSVILLE, PA September 5, 2010 -  It just keeps getting better for Duane Howard as he won his fifth straight NASCAR 358 Modified feature at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night and his eighth of the season. The win for the 2010 NASCAR Modified track champion earned him the $10,000 American Racer East Coast Modified Cup and moved him closer to claiming a top spot in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series final standings. Ron Kline got his fifth Late Model win of the season and Ben Murphy was tops in the Sidewinder Sprints.

Howard, coming from 16th starting spot, took the top spot from early leader Glenn Owens and then off Ryan Godown to get the win in the 30-lap Modified feature. Second spot went to Godown followed by eight time track champion Jeff Strunk, Craig VonDohren and Kevin Hirthler.

It took Ron Kline 12 laps to get to the front of the Late Model field and he led the balance of the 20 lapper to get the victory. Second went to Wayne Pfeil followed by Chuck Schutz, point leader Brian Shuey and Doug Walton.

Ben Murphy came from 12th starting spot to grab the lead on the 13th lap and go on to win the 20-lap Sidewinder Sprint feature. Joe Robertson was second followed by Mike Kiser.

The final point race of the season for the NASCAR 358 Modifieds and Late Models takes place on Saturday, September 11 and is sponsored by Green Lane Wm. Penn/Four Star Lettering. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m. Keith Gerhart, who has sung the National Anthem at Phillies, Iron Pigs and Yankees games, will be singing the Star Spangled Banner as we remember September 11th.  Fans are being asked to bring American Flags to wave on this special evening.

BECCA ANDERSON WINS ON TAYLOR & MESSICK NIGHT SATURDAY  AT DELAWARE INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY - URC

Becca Anderson of Houston, DE scored her first win of the season and tenth career win Saturday night at the Delaware International Speedway for the eighteenth race of the 2010 Rislone URC Sprint Series.  Anderson was URC's  fourteenth different winner of the season collecting $2,000 for the win.   Anderson is also looking at a $500 bonus posted by CnB Mushrooms, if she can sweep the weekend by winning  the URC event on Sunday night at the Georgetown Speedway.   Both races this weekend are point races for the season long Taylor & Messick Delaware State Sprint Series.   Anderson ran an awesome race but luck did go her way on lap fourteen when race leader Josh Weller tangled with a lapped car and displaying the yellow.   Anderson inherited the lead at that point driving the Dave Bett's owned sprint and ran uncontested to the win.

A field of twenty-six URC sprint cars turned out for the program with heat race wins going to Art Liedl, Josh Weller and  Rory Janney as Eddie Wagner won the "B" Main.

In the twenty-five lap Rislone URC sprint feature, Josh Weller of Mertztown, PA  gunned to the lead at the drop of the green flag.    Six time URC Champion Curt Michael charged from his twelfth starting position to cross the line in sixth as the field completed the first lap.

With three laps down, the caution  was displayed for Mike Kostic who stopped with a flat tire.     Weller set a blistering pace  as the race restarted and was chased by Art Liedl, Becca Anderson and Kramer Williamson.

The yellow flag was again displayed, this time for a multi-car mix-up involving Randy West, Jonathan Swanson, Tim Higgins and Andy Best.

On the restart, it was all Weller but now Becca Anderson was in second and Kramer Williamson third.   The turning point of the race came on lap fourteen when Justin Jones, a  lapped car, tangled with race leader Josh Weller in turn three.   The yellow was displayed with both Weller and Jones requiring a hook to return to the pits.  An outstanding and dominating ride by Weller had come to an end.

When green flag racing resumed, Becca Anderson  was on point with Kramer Williamson  now in the chase.   Curt Michael ran third followed by JJ Grasso and Justin Collett.   Anderson maintained a comfortable lead over Williamson so he  never challenged for the top spot.   Williamson held the same distance over Michael in third as Grasso and Collett followed in the top five.

The top five remained unchanged for the final laps with Becca Anderson easily taking the win.

FEATURE FINISH:   Becca Anderson, Kramer Williamson, Curt Michael, JJ Grasso,  Justin Collett, Rory Janney, Robbie Stillwaggon, Kevin Darling, Tim Iulg, Fran Hogue, Joe Zuczek, Eddie Wagner, Scott Pursell, Midge Miller, Josh Weller, Justin Jones, Jonathan Swanson, Randy West, Andy Best, Tim Higgins, Art Liedl, Mike Kostic, Bill Unglert,  Rob Liedl, Randy Wilbert.

CASTRONEVES OUTLASTS FIELD TO WIN AT KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY - IRL

SPARTA, Ky.  (Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010) - Helio Castroneves, who pitted on Lap 147 of 200 on the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway, took over the lead when the leaders had to come into the pits for a splash of fuel in the final laps of the Kentucky Indy 300 and went on to win his second race of the season.

Pole sitter Ed Carpenter finished second at the track for the second year in a row and Panther/Vision Racing teammate Dan Wheldon was third. Tony Kanaan charged from 26th in the 27-car field to fourth and Dario Franchitti was fifth.

Franchitti closed the IZOD IndyCar Series championship points gap on Will Power, who finished eighth, to 17 with two races left.

Also on Sept. 4, Pippa Mann did everything right to win her first Firestone Indy Lights race. J.K. Vernay did just about everything right during the season - and just enough in the Drive Smart. Buckle Up Kentucky 100 - to virtually wrap up the series championship.

Mann, the pole sitter in the No. 11 Sam Schmidt Motorsports car, jumped to a large lead after a Lap 5 restart and cruised to a 6.8372-second victory over James Hinchcliffe's No. 2 TMR-Xtreme Coil Drilling entry. She's the second female (Ana Beatriz at Nashville and Iowa) to win in Firestone Indy Lights.

Vernay, who was third in the No. 7 Lucas Oil/CJ/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car, takes a 48-point lead over Hinchcliffe into the season finale Oct. 2 at Homestead-Miami Speedway and only needs to take the green flag to clinch the title.

Men’s Soccer Rallies Past Concord for 3-1 Victory - URC

ATHENS, W.V. – East Stroudsburg University spotted Concord a 1-0 lead and then went down to 10 men early in the second half before rallying for a 3-1 victory for its second straight win to open the 2010 season on Saturday afternoon, September 4, in West Virginia.

Franklin Parks gave Concord the lead in the 30th minute and a red card 10 minutes into the second half put the Warriors down a man, but ESU managed to come back for an important early season win after a season-opening 2-0 win vs. Davis & Elkins on Friday.

Senior forward Shastri Spencer tied the game with his first career goal in the 72nd minute, and junior forward Greg Schook put the Warriors ahead 2-1 two minutes later to stun the homestanding Mountain Lions.

Redshirt senior midfielder Michael Kane sealed the victory with a goal with three minutes remaining in regulation. Senior back Josh Arcona assisted on the Warriors’ final two goals for his first career points.

Schook had a pair of game-winning goals last season, part of a five-goal campaign that was tied for second on the team. Kane notched his third career goal and also had an assist after moving to the midfield from back, where he started the last two years and was an All-PSAC East and All-Region selection last season.

Senior goalkeeper Troy Hernandez had two saves for ESU. Matt Hamilton had six saves for Concord but left a little more than three minutes in the second half. Jamie Greenwood went the rest of the way in goal, didn’t make a save and allowed all three scores by the Warriors.

Despite the man disadvantage, ESU outshot Concord 17-6, including 7-2 in the second half.

The Warriors will host Lock Haven in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 17 at 3:30 p.m.

Frantz’s Hat Trick Leads No. 5 ESU Field Hockey to 5-0 Win at Merrimack - ESU

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Senior forward Jessica Frantz scored three goals for her second career hat trick as No. 5 East Stroudsburg University began its 2010 field hockey season with a 5-0 win at Merrimack on Saturday afternoon, September 4.

Frantz opened the scoring with a penalty stroke at the 11:10 mark, scored another goal with just under 10 minutes left in the first half and completed her three-goal game with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

A second team All-PSAC East pick last season, Frantz had 14 goals and 10 assists and ranked fifth in the PSAC in points per game. She scored three goals vs. Mansfield in the final home game of the regular season last year and has 35 goals in her collegiate career, 17 at ESU and 18 at IUP during her first two seasons in 2007 and 2008.

Senior forward Brittany Kocis scored the Warriors’ third goal with 2:01 left in the first half, opening her final year at ESU with her 16th career goal.

Senior midfielder Kayla Cilenti added a goal and two assists. She found the cage with 17 minutes remaining in the second half and assisted on Kocis’ goal and Frantz’s final goal of the game. Kocis had the assist on Cilenti’s goal after a penalty corner.

Junior goalkeeper Maureen Ordnung made nine saves and sophomore Sarah Dobroskey had three saves in the final six minutes.

Ordnung saved a penalty stroke with the Warriors holding a 1-0 lead and improved to 16-7 as a starter. She was second in Division II in save percentage while starting all 21 games last season on ESU’s NCAA Playoff team.

ESU held a 31-19 advantage in shots and 18-7 margin in penalty corners. Kerri Bergquist made 14 saves for Merrimack, 12 in the first half.

Warriors Post 57-0 Victory at Pace in Football Season Opener - ESU

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Redshirt senior quarterback Matt Marshall threw for 337 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, hitting five different receivers, and the defense forced five turnovers and had nine sacks as East Stroudsburg University opened the 2010 season with a 57-0 win at Pace University on Saturday afternoon, September 4.

The shutout is ESU’s fifth in a season opener under head coach Denny Douds, and the 57 points are the third-most in the first game of the year in 83 seasons of varsity football.

Marshall had the sixth 300-yard passing game of his career, but the Warriors didn’t break the game open until late in the second quarter when they scored two touchdowns in the final minute.

A safety on a bad snap on a punt was the only scoring of the first quarter, freshman kicker Taylor Groff hit a 29-yard field goal early in the second quarter for a 5-0 lead and sophomore tailback Eric Deery scored on a two-yard run for the Warriors’ first touchdown with just over five minutes left in the half.

ESU went into intermission with a 26-0 lead after Marshall’s first two TD passes. The senior quarterback cashed in on a nine play, 70-yard drive with an eight-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Bryan Ogden with 52 seconds left in the half, and again with a 26-yard scoring toss to redshirt senior wide receiver Ed Kiser with 10 seconds to play after a sack and forced fumble by redshirt junior defensive tackle Cody Berry.

The Warriors scored on their first drive of the second half, capitalizing on a short field after a four-yard punt with redshirt senior wide receiver Jeff Giglio catching a nine-yard TD pass from Marshall.

The score remained 33-0 going into the fourth quarter when ESU hit paydirt on consecutive offensive plays in a span of 25 seconds. Redshirt freshman tailback Joe Klebon went 68 yards for a TD on a screen pass, junior defensive end Brett Moss forced a fumble that was recovered by redshirt senior outside linebacker Matt Freed, and Marshall hit freshman tailback Dusty Reed with a 44-yard pass down the seam for a 47-0 lead with 12:18 remaining.

Senior defensive end Richard Peter, a two-year letterwinner for the Warriors after playing his freshman year at Pace, scored the game’s final touchdown on a 20-yard fumble return after a sack by freshman linebacker Don Kinney, Jr. Groff’s 33-yard field goal with 1:04 to play completed the scoring.

ESU had exactly 500 yards of total offense, 380 passing and 120 rushing, and held Pace to 155 yards on 69 plays. The Warriors outgained the Setters 168-1 in the second quarter and 207-20 in the fourth quarter while scoring 24 points in both periods.

Eight players accounted for the Warriors’ nine sacks for a defense that was in the top 25 in the country with 2.75 sacks per game last season. Berry and senior linebacker Kevin Schafer both had solo sacks and assisted on another.

ESU also had eight players contribute to five turnovers. Junior linebacker Mike Bergey had a first-quarter interception, redshirt junior linebacker Bryan Billger and redshirt freshman wide receiver Robert Bleiler teamed up on a punt return fumble in the second quarter and Berry had his sack, forced fumble and recovery late in the first half. Moss stripped quarterback Joe Romanick and Freed recovered in the third quarter and Peter’s return for a TD after Kinney’s sack completed the turnover story in the fourth.

A total of 17 players contributed to a PSAC-best 33 turnovers last season, and ESU was 11th in Division II in the turnover department.

The Warriors also committed five turnovers and lost four fumbles. Three of the fumbles came in the first quarter, two inside the 10-yard line, to keep the offense off the board before Groff scored his first career points on a field goal following the Setters’ special teams miscue on a punt return.

The freshman kicker was 7-for-7 on extra points and 2-for-3 on field goals in his collegiate debut, missing only on a 43-yard attempt after the Warriors didn’t get the hold down.

Deery (16 carries, 63 yards), Klebon and Reed all scored their first career touchdowns, with Klebon and Reed catching TD passes in their first career action. ESU ran for a 4.3-yard average, with 120 yards on 28 carries, and didn’t allow a sack.

Redshirt junior quarterback Ray Wagner was 3-for-4 for 43 yards in relief of Marshall, and the Warriors’ quarterbacks connected with 10 different receivers. Five players caught TD passes for the first time since week 10 vs. Bloomsburg in 2006.

Giglio (64 yards), Kiser (60 yards) and Bleiler (57 yards) all had five catches and Reed, Ogden and freshman fullback Darius Jackson caught two passes each. Klebon, redshirt sophomore wide receivers Jordan Hallman and Wade Williams and redshirt senior fullback Brent Jones also had receptions.

ESU hosts IUP in its home opener next Saturday at 6 p.m. in the first of four straight games against the preseason favorites in the PSAC.

Game Notes:

* Marshall had 363 yards of total offense, replicating his 360-yard performance vs. Edinboro in the NCAA Playoffs in the Warriors’ final game last season. His 337 passing yards were the third-most of his career. His previous career-high in TD passes was four, both against Slippery Rock in 2008 and 2009.

* Deery had two 100-yard games last season (Cheyney, Millersville) but scored his first career TD on Saturday.

* Klebon’s 68-yard TD on a screen pass was ESU’s longest play from scrimmage.

* R-Fr. WR Robert Bleiler started and had five catches for 57 yards in his first career game, along with three tackles on special teams.

* Giglio’s TD catch was the 15th of his career, Kiser’s TD was his 10th.

* ESU had 500 yards of total offense in three games last season.

* The Warriors’ high in passing yards last year was 430 (at Kutztown), followed by 316 (vs. Clarion). Marshall and Wagner combined for 380 yards on Saturday.

* The defense’s nine sacks are the most in at least a decade at ESU. Three players had sacks in their first career games for the Warriors – Jr. DE Brett Moss, Fr. OLB Derek Brown and Fr. LB Don Kinney, Jr.

* Freed led the PSAC with 10 sacks last season but didn’t register a sack on Saturday. He still had six solo tackles and has led the PSAC in tackles the last two years.

* ESU’s 18 interceptions and 15 fumble recoveries were both the most in the PSAC last season.

* The Warriors forced five turnovers and had two 5+ turnover games in 2009 – 5 in a loss to C.W. Post, and 7 in a win vs. Slippery Rock.

* ESU has had season-opening shutouts under Douds in 2003 (58-0 vs. Lenoir-Rhyne), 1989 (24-0 at Southern Conn. St.), 1976 (14-0 at Montclair) and 1975 (7-0 at Slippery Rock).

* ESU won 72-17 at Bentley in 2005 in its highest-scoring opener. The second-most points was the 58-0 drubbing at Lenoir-Rhyne, followed by Saturday’s 57-0 win.

* Douds won his 227th career game and coached in his 376th career game. Chris Dapolito made his collegiate head coaching debut for Pace.

600CC MICRO SPRINTS ADDED TO A.C. GAMBLERS CLASSIC WEEKEND – Gambler’s Classic

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ September 4, 2010  - The 600cc Micro Sprint Car class will be part of the ninth annual Gambler’s Classic indoor race weekend at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ on January 28-29, 2011.

The division will be highlighted with a separate feature event from the headline TQ(Three Quarter)-Midgets only on Friday night, January 28. Qualifying, which will precede the 25-lap feature event, includes time trials and a B-Main in this one-day event.

“We are working closely with chassis manufacturers to design a set of rules that will make it easy and affordable for teams to bring their dirt cars to Atlantic City,” said event race director Danny Sammons. “There will be a mandated right-rear tire size, front-axle width, seat angle and other technical items to prevent participants from building a purpose-built car.”

The 25-lap feature race will pay a minimum of $500 to win. In keeping with the tradition of the Gambler’s Classic, the winning driver, if he takes part in the Gambler's bonus program, will receive $1,500. Pending sponsorship, the purse of the event could be increased further. Interested parties are urged to call the number below for details.

The entry list will be limited to 40 cars.

In addition to the designated Friday afternoon practice, those wishing for additional track time can do so on Thursday, January 27 with a special paid-practice session.

Drivers cannot compete in both the 600cc Micro Sprint Car and the TQ-Midget division during weekend.

As has been the case during the long-and-storied history of the fan-friendly race at Boardwalk Hall, the 600cc Micro Sprint Cars will be able run with the TQ-Midget class, but the same car cannot race in both events.

Kunkletown, Pa.’s Ryan Smith drove a 600cc Micro Sprint Car to a fourth place finish in the most recent Gambler’s Classic event. In addition, Glenn Heverin and Rob Vivona joined Smith as 600cc Micro Sprint Car qualifiers.

Lou Cicconi of Aston, Pa., is the defending champion of the TQ-Midget indoor race.

Yasukawa who started competing in the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2003 will be competing in his sixth Indy Japan race at the 1.5-mile oval and his first with Conquest Racing.

"I am really excited to be back in the car for the Indy Japan 300 race in a couple of weeks,” expressed Yasukawa. “I always enjoy being able to race in front of my family, friends, and fans in Japan, and would like to thank Conquest Racing, CWE, and VIDA for this opportunity.

“I have not driven an Indy car for a year now, but I am very confident that the team will give me a strong car. I have worked with several crewmembers of the #36 car in the past, so it shouldn't take too long to gel with the team.

“We’re expecting a record crowd for the Japan race this year, and I'm sure it is going to be very exciting!"

The US-born Japanese driver has been competing partially in the series these last few years with this year marking the eighth consecutive season that he competes in at least one race in the IZOD IndyCar Series.

“We’re very happy to have Roger join the team and to be able to give him the opportunity to once again compete in front of his fans and family in Japan,” said Eric Bachelart, Conquest Racing team owner. “Roger will bring great experience to the team that will be good for everyone and we look forward to working with him.”

Yasukawa started competing in karts in 1990, first racing in the Unites States then Italy. The driver who is fluent in English, Japanese and Italian came back to race on American soil in the Skip Barber Formula Dodge Western Series in 1998 taking the championship by storm, winning 10 of 11 races and placing second in the only race he did not win.

After a few more years in the Barber Dodge Series and a season in the Atlantic Series he graduated to IndyCar racing in 2003 with Super Aguri Fernandez Racing.

The Indy Japan 300 takes place September 18, 2010 and will be broadcast live on Versus September 18, 2010 starting at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Pen Argyl 35 - Palisades 3 in Colonial League football opener

Dylan Evans, a junior running back for Pen Argyl rushed for 128 yards and three touchdowns, to help Pen Argyl to a 35-3 rout Friday night of Palisades in a Colonial League football opener at Rohrer Stadium.

Evans rushed for 100 of his yards in the second half. But he still scored twice on short runs in the first half and broke a 48-yard return on a punt to flip field position in the Knights' favor.

Pen Argyl also benefitted from another big special teams play late in the first quarter when JT Krincek broke through to block a 45-yard field goal attempt by Palisades' Mike McClintock. Scott Beltz scooped up the loose ball and returned it 52 yards to the Pirates 8.

That set up Evans' first touchdown, an 8-yard burst to give Pen Argyl a 14-0 lead.

An apparent 74-yard catch and run by Pen Argyl's Mike Racciato was wiped out by an illegal shift midway through the second quarter, but Evans scored later in the same drive on a 6-yard run.

Palisades got on the board with no time left in the first half on a 23-yard field goal by McClintock, cutting the deficit to 21-3.

The momentum hardly changed over to the Pirates' side. Quarterback Nathan Hood scored on a 3-yard keeper on Pen Argyl's first drive on the second half, and Evans finished his night with a 3-yard TD nearly three minutes into the fourth quarter.

The Knight defense, led by linebacker Tyler Horn (three sacks), did an outstanding job of keeping Palisades' Parris under wraps.

Twenty-two cars took part in the racing program with heat race victories going to Randy West, Robbie Stillwaggon and Becca Anderson.

In the twenty-five lap feature, Robbie Stillwaggon se the early pace followed by Randy West and Tim Hogue.   Curt Michael was on a charge and moved into third on lap five.   A caution flag on lap nine for Scott Pursell, opened the door for Michael.  When the green flag fell, Michael powered by Stillwaggon and quickly established a solid lead.

At the halfway point, Michael was leading followed by JJ Grasso, the point leader at the start of the feature event.  Stillwaggon ran third with Josh Weller fourth and charging as Tim Hogue finished fifth.   On  lap sixteen, the second and final caution of the race was displayed for Randy West who spun in turn four.   On the restart, Michael took off leaving Grasso to struggle as he lost power steering.  This opened the door for Josh Weller to move into second followed by Stillwaggon and Hogue.   Grasso quickly faded and dropped out of the top ten.

Meanwhile at the front of the pack, Michael was leading but Josh Weller was cutting into that commanding lead.   Weller ran out of time as Michael took the checker flag in convincing style.  Weller was second followed by Stillwaggon, Justin Collett and Tim Hogue.
